Today, at the home of Columbus resident Judy Kress, Mayor Michael B. Coleman announced the availability of a recycling and yard waste survey online at www.RecycleColumbus.org. There, residents can respond to the mayor’s proposal to bring a new curbside recycling program to all single-family homes at no direct cost to residents.

“This is the beginning of a community process to engage our residents about the best way to implement a comprehensive curbside recycling program in the City of Columbus,” Mayor Coleman said. “This can’t just be my recycling program. It has to be our resident’s recycling program. Because it won’t be successful if they don’t use it.”

Combining the collection of recyclables on an alternating schedule with a modified yard waste collection program would offer the most cost-effective, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly design. However, the Mayor wants to understand and incorporate residents’ preferences into the formulation of the program.

“The survey will help Columbus tailor a recycling program that best fits the needs of our residents,” said Hearcel F. Craig, chair of the Public Service & Transportation Committee. “Recycling is key to making Columbus an attractive 21st century community to live and raise a family.”

The online survey will be available until July 31. Additionally, a random sample of 1,200 homes was mailed a hard-copy of the survey. Recipients of the mailing are asked to respond as soon as possible, and no later than June 30.
